As much as we would like to, The Ribbon Mosaic does not grant last wish requests – we refer them to organizations that do. We are a small organization and lack the funds to provide the last family vacation or family reunion, etc. And while people may think the economy has revived, for many organizations it hasn’t. When we formed The Ribbon Mosaic, our resource base was very large. Since then many organizations have shut their doors, or have confined their assistance to a specific geographical area and/or age limit. Resources for children, though less, are easier to locate than those for adults. All organizations depend on donations from others to survive.

We have received many requests for last wishes from family members. When we refer you to a last wish organization, the “Last Wish” organization will require that requests come directly from the adult battling the disease. And they must be able to communicate their last wish and be able to participate in the request.

Financial resources of granting organizations are limited. The people that can be involved (included in the expense of the wish) is the person for which the wish is granted and an immediate family member or caregiver (such as a spouse/significant other/parent/children living in the home under the age of 18). Any other friends, relatives, or family members are responsible for making their own arrangements and payment for flights, hotel, meals, events, etc.

The person requesting the last wish must have their doctor’s approval. The granting organization will not pay for ambulance transportation, emergency room visit, hospital stay, or extended stay for family members should the patient require special medical assistance.

While this problem is not centralized to this particular website or email accounts, it is increasing in its intensity – SPAM. And by posting this vent against SPAM, we risk someone really pounding our site with endless SPAM just for the fun of it. The “I’ll show them” SPAMMER mentality.

Not that the SPAMMER is taking the time to read this post – but all comments have to be approved before they are posted on the website. And we do this with a simple click of a button – similar to how a SPAMMER sends their garbage out to the world. And since the comments we are recently receiving are primarily SPAM, it is easier to “permanently delete all,” rather than to take time to read through each one to determine its validity. Which is a shame, because there are people who are coming to this site seeking information or sharing information that in turn would help another.

We have an excellent web team, so we are not interested in increasing our readership, our advertisement, our speed, etc. And because we are frustrated with your attempts to force your information down our throats, we “delete all.” Then there are those comments that are simply “run on” sentences that make no sense at all and take up a chunk of space with the attempt to insert a virus and collect email addresses.

We are only interested in trying to direct another human being in a stressful health situation to a source that can help them define their disease, seek treatments, obtain a good physician, or information on how to find caregiver support. We hope that you or a beloved family member will never find themselves in that position – scared to death and worried sick about what will happen to you or a family member. Of course, you are free to contact us, but we may not see your plea for an answer, because there will be so much SPAM from people like you that we will miss it.

We are taught in childhood that “wishes” are important. We make a wish and blow out all the candles on our birthday cake; make a wish and blow all the seeds off a dandelion; make a wish and throw a coin in a fountain, well, or a pool of water; make a wish before pulling a turkey wishbone at Thanksgiving, we light a candle at church, or make a wish upon a star. Most wishes have to be kept secret (we’re told) in order to come true.

We learn not to expect that all wishes come true. A wish is “hope” that it could happen. As we grow older or desperate about a situation a wish often becomes a prayer. Like a wish, not all prayers are guaranteed – and yet, we still hold on to the hope that it is possible. And as adults we still wish before we blow out our candles, break a wishbone, look at a star, or toss a coin into the water. ”Hope” lives within us forever.

If “our” particular wish did not come true for us, it is possible that it came true for someone else. Vegas is a good example of coins in a fountain. People throw coins into the water of the Volcano at the Mirage, the harbor at New York-New York, Bellagio’s fountains and various other pools of water in and out of buildings. Where do those wishes go?

The coins from the Vegas “New York Harbor” are collected once a year and donated to the Make a Wish Foundation. The Bellagio donated more than $12,000 last year to the Habitat for Humanity. Planet Hollywood resort donates their “wishes” to Opportunity Village and Boys & Girls Club. In the malls, staff remove the coins on a monthly basis. Local organizations can apply to receive donations, but they are required to sort and clean the coins themselves. The money is collected and delivered by bucket. Four to six buckets a month are collected and donated with a value of between $800 and $1,200. That is a small example of how “water” wishes are granted. Internationally, coins are collected, cleaned and distributed to charity.

So take heart that though you did not directly receive your wish – someone who needed it more than you did.

Okay. So you look at the title of this blog and think…WI-Fi and Sperm….hmmm….must be another rock band. And given the names of current groups out there, I looked it up to make sure there isn’t one……at least not yet.

Wi-Fi and sperm means what you would think – internet and a guy’s little swimmers. According to Reuters Health, “Our data suggests that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease quality.”

During a study, sperm samples were taken from healthy men and a few drops were placed under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Several hours later, a quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming and nine percent showed DNA damage. The cause – they claim sperm damage is from electromagnetic radiation during wireless communication.

Another study found that radiation from cell phones creates feeble sperm. The word “feeble” produces a picture in my mind of tiny sperm with tiny walkers shuffling slowly to reach their destination. (Hey…it’s late and I’m tired – the mind takes off on its own.) Anyway…they have found that a man sitting with a laptop on his lap produces enough heat to damage his sperm.

It not an absolute – some scientists disagree and cite other factors (such as diet) to infertility in men. But just in case, guys, keep your computer off your laps and your cell phone in your jacket pocket. And ladies….don’t believe it when a guy says, “But honey, we don’t need protection…I had a laptop on my lap all day and my cell phone in my front pants pocket.”

Before all else, I want to thank Netwirks for their hard work and creative minds in pulling together The Ribbon Mosaic website. It is difficult to explain how you envision the end result through emails and phone conversations. But they listened and developed exactly what I wanted for the people who come to this site.

The old website was limited in how it operated and expanding its pages turned into one step forward and a thousand steps back – frustrating. In order to move forward, I had to start over. Once I get the hang of how it all works, you will see the site expand quickly.

As a whole, this website is for you. Your concerns, ideas, suggestions are encouraged. Please feel free to add your voice. Visit often.
